About "SoCalSox" and our mission.

Beginnings & the ‘06 Season:
On March 21st of 2006 my friend and I were lucky
enough to attend the final game of the World Baseball
Classic for his birthday at Petco Park in San Diego.
(Ironically Japan's starter was none other than our very
own Dice-K!) As always, when attending a game in
southern California a multitude of New England
transplants decked out in full Red Sox gear are always
present. Being from central Massachusetts, I myself was
sporting my Schilling jersey that night.
Even though it is well known that many Bostonians live in San Diego, I was still shocked to find that our
seats were literally surrounded by Sox fans desperate for just a taste of baseball. As I sat there through
9 innings of historical baseball I came to the realization: as many of us as there are in California no one
had ever tried to organize us.
As fate would have it, my cousin
had just gotten me hooked on
myspace. (I was the last person on
the planet) I went home that night,
signed on to myspace and created
a page specifically to get to know
other local Red Sox fans, I called it
"So Cal Sox." The response was
undeniably strong, in just 5 days I
had over 300 friends, wrote and
read more e-mails than I do in a
year and within weeks similar sites
were popping up for different
areas all over the country.
After a few weeks I decided to take it a step further and purchase a large section of group tickets in
Anaheim to see the Sox when they came to town and sold them only too people on the myspace page.
The trip, dubbed “Spank the Monkey” ‘06, (a pun targeting the Angel’s dubious “rally monkey”) ended
up being an epic party that will be repeated every year as long as I’m breathing.
After "Spank the Monkey" I toyed with a true blue website but with work and life's oh so fun events it fell
by the wayside. The Sox '06 season came to a bitter close and besides the one week the Pats were in
town for the playoffs all seemed quite on the front.
'07 Season:
Then the Sox '07 schedule
was released and BEHOLD
they were playing the N.L.
West ON THE ROAD!! So
instead of a group trip, I
realized we could do a TOUR!
I quickly bought tickets to Sox
games in Arizona, San Diego,
Anaheim and the "Wicked
Pissah Tour" was born.
On top of “Wicked Pissah Tour” we started having regular get togethers to watch games & tailgates
when the team(s) were in town. Our first get together was in April for Sunday Night Baseball against the
Yankees, the back - to back - to back - to back home runs game. A sign of the historical season to
come.
Now that the Sox are celebrating our second Championship in four seasons, I figured it would be a great
time to finally get back to a real website for SoCalSox. A website for fans, by fans. My first goal is
expansion! A myspace friend of mine told me about a group of Sox fans in Orange county that were
looking to merge with other Sox groups to become “the biggest Sox fan group outside of New England.”
After hearing this I’ve decided to create a place on socalsox.com that will list any Sox fans group in
California (and surrounding states) that wish it so, thereby gathering ourselves under one banner and
truly becoming “the biggest Sox fan group outside of New England.”
Also At the start of Patriots
season this year I decided
to delve into other Boston
sports more actively. We
now get together in San
Diego to watch the Pats
every Sunday they play and
hey the Celtics are just
starting to play....
Keep checking back because I plan on doing some upgrading in the next few months and we will
defiantly have a lot going on for the ‘08 season! I'm also looking for any and all suggestions for the
website, any contributions you might have in mind big or small would be great. I want this to be our
website, not just mine.
Until then Go Sox!
